The Landesschützen-Ersatz-Bataillon 9 was formed on February 20, 1940 in Kassel, Wehrkreis IX. The battalion was subordinate to Division 409 and after its formation, the battalion was transferred to Mühlhausen in the same Wehrkreis IX. On October 1, 1942, the battalion was divided into a Landesschützen-Ersatz-Bataillon 9 and a Landesschützen-Ausbildungs-Bataillon 9. On April 8, 1943, these two were then united in Frankfurt am Main, also Wehrkreis IX, to form the Landesschützen-Ersatz- und Ausbildungs-Bataillon 9. On June 20, 1944, a Landesschützen-Ersatz- und Ausbildungs-Bataillon II./9 was formed in Giessen, Wehrkreis IX. The new battalion was formed from the Grenadier Replacement Battalion 355 and was also subordinated to Division 409. This formation made it necessary for the previous Landesschützen-Ersatz-Bataillon 9 to be renamed Landesschützen-Ersatz- und Ausbildungs-Bataillon I./9 on June 21, 1944. On July 9, 1944, the Landesschützen-Ersatz- und Ausbildungs-Bataillon I./9 was divided into a Landesschützen-Ersatz-Bataillon I./9 and a Landesschützen-Ausbildungs-Bataillon II./9. The replacement battalion I./9 remained stationed in Frankfurt am Main. The training battalion I./9 is relocated to Charleroi in Belgium and, after the retreat in the fall, is divided up among the units of the 275th Infantry Division. The Ersatz-Bataillon I./9 was renamed Landesschützen-Ersatz- und Ausbildungs-Bataillon I./9
