The battalion was established on December 5, 1940, in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Military District XII. The 256th Infantry Replacement Battalion was created by renaming the 127th Border Infantry Replacement Battalion and was subordinate to Division 172. The battalion was later relocated to Heidelberg, also in Military District XII. On June 13, 1942, the battalion was relocated to Troyes, France. From that June 13, 1942, the battalion was subordinate to Division 182. On October 15, 1942, the battalion was divided in Troyes into the 256th Infantry Replacement Battalion and the 256th Reserve Infantry Battalion. The reserve battalion was subordinated to the 182nd Reserve Division. After the division, the replacement battalion was subordinated to Division 462. Both battalions were renamed Grenadier Replacement Battalion 256 and Reserve Grenadier Battalion 256 on November 7, 1942. In December 1942, the replacement battalion was relocated back to Pfalzburg in Wehrkreis XII. The reserve battalion was disbanded before December 1943. The replacement battalion was no longer mentioned in the formation of the combat groups in September 1944. Accordingly, it had already been disbanded by that time.
