Schützen-Ersatz-Bataillon 5

The battalion was established on August 27, 1939, on Körner Street in Stettin, in Military District II. The 5th Motorized Infantry Replacement Battalion was subordinate to the commander of the Second Reserve Troops. The battalion provided a replacement for the 2nd Infantry Division. From November 9, 1939, the 5th Motorized Infantry Replacement Battalion was subordinate to Division 152, following the renaming of its parent unit. On February 15, 1941, the battalion was renamed the 5th Rifle Replacement Battalion. From May 15, 1942, the 5th Rifle Replacement Battalion was subordinate to the commander of Rapid Troops II. On July 5, 1942, it was renamed again, this time to Panzer Grenadier Replacement Battalion 5. From autumn 1942, the replacement battalion was directly subordinate to Military District II. This battalion was then divided on October 1, 1942, into a Panzer Grenadier Replacement Battalion and a Panzer Grenadier Training Battalion 5. These two were based in Stettin and then combined on April 10, 1943, to form the 5th Panzer Grenadier Replacement and Training Battalion. On October 19, 1943, the battalions were separated again, and the 5th Panzer Grenadier Training Battalion relocated immediately afterwards to Kalisch in the Warthegau, Military District XXI. It was subordinate to the commander of Panzertruppen XXI. Panzergrenadier Training Battalion 5 suffered heavy losses in January 1945. On January 16, 1945, it formed the Gneisenau Unit 11/XXI with three companies, which was destroyed on January 19, 1945, in the B 1 position of Wehrkreis XXI near Litzmannstadt.
